Or do I mean re-imagining, or revamping, or reworking? In any case we’d like some help from you and to that end we’ve created a very short survey and we’d appreciate if you’d take the time to complete it. There are only 10 questions (and you don’t even have to answer the last one). Seriously though, we have a small amount of hard won money to do this and we want to make sure we do it right and create something that has genuine value for our audience. Power of the Crowd – the presentations

‘Power of the Crowd’ was an event organised by Fabrica in November 2011. Five guest speakers gave short presentations about what they thought was ‘Power of the crowd’

In preparation for the forthcoming The Power of the Crowd event, check out William H. Whyte’s The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces documentary. A fascinating documentary from the late 1980s, which looks at how people inhabit urban spaces.

Melanie Manchot – Artist Talk

On the 19 October Melanie Manchot came to Fabrica to talk about her work. In her illustrated presentation, Melanie elaborated on the ideas surrounding her current exhibition, Gathering. She talked about precusory photographic work made in Russia and Berlin, and illuminated the process of making Celebration (Cyprus Street) and Walk (Square). Here is a video recording of the event.

For this year’s White Night, we collecting One Minute Manifestos. Declare your intentions in under a minute for the chance for your manifesto to be broadcast outside of Fabrica this Saturday night. All manifestos will be collected at OneMinuteManifestos.wordpress.com.

To get your ideas flowing here is artist and Fabrica project manger, Jonathan Swain’s manifesto entitled ‘Ten principals of the Yoke for the contemporary user.’

1. The new age of the yoke is the era of the baroque or rococo: pure ornament.
2. Yokes are to be made from modern materials.
Out with wood, leather and metals. In with plastic gels, helium and foam.
3. Yokes can be inflated, or soft and deflated.
4. Yokes are not to be useful or convenient in any way.
5. They are not for carrying the shopping or to be used as a USB hub or as additional storage capacity.
6. Nor does a yoke offer sponsorship potential, or
7. should it be used as a fixture for lighting or signaling devices etc.
8. Yokes can offer neck relief
9. but Yokes are not forms of punishment or subjugation.
And finally
10. Most of all, Yokes are versatile, clean and fun.

Words and pictures by Rachel Henson. Our Artist-in-residence during the exhibition – Gathering updates us on the progress of the new flick book she is creating for White Night.

I have 16, 352 frames taken over 20 days, to be condensed into 6 or 8, 80 frame sequences. I must discover, in the footage, the cleanest passages though, under intense time pressure.

The work shapes during the edit; an improvisation with what I’ve got in my laptop.

I like best finding the route for the first time, playing with the navigation through from one point to another, the different ways of leading the eye from these steps to that door up ahead.

I want the edit to be playtime too.

I question why the figure is there.
She is there to show the space by the way she navigates it – as a change from first person framing – our avatar. She is not a layer in herself, or is she? No figure is more or less neutral. My actor comes as herself.

Rachel Henson Night Walk

After some interesting feedback, we were asked to walk from that fancy hotel to the West Pier, via an ugly underground car park. We were to remain silent and attentive, and photo and video documented our journey.

Rachel Henson at Work (West Pier, Brighton; 30.09.11)

Throughout October and November we have a new Artist in Residence. Rachel Henson makes flick books that a layer of fiction to a real journey. Daniel Yanez-Gonzalez met Rachel on location and took some pictures of the work in progress.

I must admit I did not know what to expect when I got to the West Pier this morning at 07.20 AM. Such moribund and somehow genuine landmark is the perfect place to discover what photographers are made of. I personally believe a quick look at the manners of those present and attempting to photograph that decadent monster should be enough to conclude that there are three types of photo artisans: Those who enjoy “snapping” around, those who know how to use a camera, and finally those who, like Rachel Henson, are willing to take a risk both aesthetically and physically in order to guarantee a final product worth admiring.
