A Simple Act of Wonder

Walter & Zoniel

Archive Exhibitions (31 July to 1 September 2020)
In this playful new work, acclaimed artists Walter & Zoniel connect Moulsecoomb and Bevendean in the suburbs of Brighton with Fabrica in the centre.
Drawing on their love of colour, portraiture, humour and their boundless curiosity about people and the stories they tell, Walter & Zoniel invite us into the lives of others, asking us to examine our attitudes about other people and the mythologies or reputations that stick to some places.

At Fabrica, Walter & Zoniel have applied a bright colourful treatment to Fabrica’s exhibition space, experiencing the carpet of discovery to learn more about the culture and community of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean through photographic images, 360 film, and objects loaned by those who have a particularly compelling story to tell. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions this exhibition has been installed but can only be accessed online.

In Moulsecoomb and Bevendean the artists have installed a colourful trail of temporary artworks: by painting residents’ houses and community spaces and also a major work painted on the green at The Avenue.

The artwork in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean emerged out of an intense period with local residents undertaken by the artists earlier this year and which they describe as a ‘portrait’ of a neighbourhood that is largely unnoticed by the rest of the city.

About The Artist

Artistic duo, Walter Hugo and Zoniel Burton have been collaborating and exhibiting internationally for over ten years. Their practice is multidisciplinary, with interactive installations and performances being just one aspect of their wide-ranging output. Themes central to their practice are a meditation upon our existence and reflection of the intricacies of the relationships we have with each other and with the natural world around us. The artists describe their approach to their work as ‘seeking to charm and entice the viewer into deeper thought and becoming present in the moment’.

Walter & Zoniel have been commissioned by Tate, Somerset House, Photo London and Freize, with their site-specific installations also presented in Miami, San Francisco and Durham as part of national and international festivals and art fairs. Their work has been acquired by the National Art Collection and the National Portrait Gallery collection.
