For this month's BFI Academy event join us for a screening of short experimental films, and a workshop centred around practical hands-on tape loop making with Ian Helliwell.

The workshop will be a chance to listen to electronic sounds, and gain tactile experience of working with magnetic recording tape to create analogue sound loops. It will be led by local filmmaker Ian Helliwell - the self-taught and self-funded audiovisual artist who works in music, film, animation, analogue electronics, instrument building, collage, installations, live performance, light show projection, graphic design, writing and film programming. He has made over 170 experimental films – one of the largest bodies of shorts in the world to feature electronic music soundtracks by one artist.

Ian coined the term ‘creative soldering’ to best define his intuitive electronics approach, and since the 1990s he has designed and built a unique range of electronic tone generating machines – Hellitrons and Hellisizers – which he uses to realise his compositions. He also makes significant use of quarter inch magnetic recording tape for his film soundtracks and audio collages, and shares his techniques via his Analogue Sound Workshop.

A screening of a selection of Ian's short experimental films, will be followed by a practical magnetic tape loop making workshop.

Delivered by Fabrica in partnership with Screen Shot on behalf of Young Film Network South East, supported with National Lottery funding.
