Funeral Parade of Roses

Film at Fabrica (6 November 2025, 6.00pm - 8.30pm)
Turning the lens on the gay subcultures of the 1960s Tokyo underground, Toshio Matsumoto’s masterpiece Funeral Parade of Roses puts queer experience in the spotlight.

Funeral Parade of Roses / Toshio Matsumoto /1969 / 1hr&45mins / Subtitled / Rated 18

One of the most subversive, intoxicating films of the 60s Funeral Parade of Roses is a celebration of youth and subcultures and a condemnation of intolerance.

Trans actor Peter plays Eddie, hostess at Bar Genet where she's ignited a violent love-triangle with reigning drag queen Leda for the attentions of club owner Gonda. One of Japan's leading experimental filmmakers, Matsumoto distorts time in this combination of melodrama, comedy, horror, documentary and experimental film.

Matsumoto’s movie attacks on both fronts with an irrepressible fervour, creating a film that has retained its power to surprise, delight and shock more than 50 years later.” BFI
