CREATIVE ACTION FILM FESTIVAL

Blind Woman's Curse + Life Drawing

Film at Fabrica (20 October 2024, 7.15pm - 10.15pm)
Fabrica is hosting Creative Action: An adrenaline-fueled weekend film festival celebrating the art of action with powerful female leads across global cinema, exciting film workshops, and real-life kickboxing thrills!

Creative Action is a weekend film festival that includes: a screening programme of four cross-global features, a Brighton International Animation Festival partnership programme of international animated shorts, three inspiring and creative film workshops and a special real-life kickboxing demonstration.

The festival programme repositions action films from across the globe and across the ages by focusing on the artistry in action, showcasing the beauty of movement and creativity of stunts and combat. Readdressing the male dominated focus of action films, all features will showcase powerful female leads such as Franka Potente as Lola, Zhang Ziyi as Mei, and Meiko Kaji as Akemi, performing breath-taking action sequences.

Life Drawing: Exploring Action

Ahead of the screening between 7:30pm and 8:30pm we will be hosting a 1hr untutored life drawing session led by film programmer and artist Piers Courtney. The session will explore movement and action, inspired by Akemi's beautiful action sequences in Blind Woman's Curse.

Blind Woman's Curse / 1970 / 1hr25mins / Rated 15

“Blind Woman’s Curse is a rare yakuza/supernatural/horror film from Nikkatsu ... I can’t say I’ve seen many films with someone slicing off the back tattoos of gang members after they’ve been murdered, a dancing hunchback who laughs maniacally and somewhat Italian horror tinges that pop up throughout. I’m guessing Teruo Ishii might have watched a bit of Mario Bava and mixed it with gothic horror, while throwing in dashes of slapstick comedy, gang intrigue, fart jokes and brilliant action scenes with beautiful arterial spray.”
