Artist Maria Amidu will be exploring how parts of her new writing project, 'Air', might be translated into an audio visual installation.
'Air' documents the critical moments after a tragic family death in East London in the early 1970s. It comprises three sections and 1973 has been created out of Part One (condition fragments traces).
The installation puts projected photographic images of objects and places from the 1970s to the present day, alongside recordings of texts from the book. These spoken passages have been made by readers who have been invited by the artist because of their personal or professional relationship to the writing.
By drawing on her personal archive and current research concerning this family event, Maria is substantiating a deeply emotional aspect of her own family history for the first time. As well as exploring the writer as artist/artist as writer dynamic, she is interested in how the feelings she has experienced can somehow become part of a wider, and perhaps helpful, conversation about death.
