Making Space

The Weight of Arrival | Star Khani

Artist Residencies & Projects (20 July to 24 July 2026)
Fabrica has awarded a Making Space artist residency to Star Khani, for late July 2026. Star will be developing The Weight of Arrival, a mixed-media photography project that responds to Brighton’s historic architecture through the perspective of a newcomer.

A new resident of Brighton & Hove, Star is working with black-and-white photographs of the city’s churches, towers, façades, and other historic buildings from across the city: places that have become part of her first emotional map of Brighton. In this new body of work, rather than treating architecture as a fixed subject, Star approaches each building as a surface shaped by her own experience of arriving in England from Iran and encountering a city already carrying its own long history.

During her residency, Star will begin to scope the work as an exhibition installation: gathering the photographic source material and transforming it through illustrative interventions that reflect her own response to each building: shifting perspectives between observation and interpretation, documentation and emotional response.

At the heart of The Weight of Arrival is a reflection on how place is seen, felt, and inhabited. The project asks how buildings that may seem ordinary to long-term residents can hold an entirely different charge when viewed by someone who has only just arrived, and how photography can become a site where architecture, memory, and personal experience meet.

In developing this work, Star is inviting viewers to re-examine familiar places from the perspective of a newcomer and her lived experience of migration and there will be an opportunity for a small audience to meet with Star at Fabrica to discuss the project and its development.

About The Artist

Based in Brighton, Star (Setare) Khani is an Iranian visual artist and designer working across graphic design, poster design, fine art photography, digital painting, and mixed-media image making. Over the past decade, her practice has moved between visual communication and contemporary visual art, exploring memory, displacement, architecture, emotional atmosphere, and the relationship between personal narrative and place. She is a long-standing member of the Iranian Graphic Designers Society, a respected nonprofit, professional association for graphic designers in Iran. Her work has been recognised through international poster exhibitions, photography exhibitions, media coverage, and awards in the UK, Iran, Cyprus, Poland, France, and Germany.

Artist Residencies

The Making Space residency at Fabrica offers artists four days in the gallery to develop, test, or present new work to a focused audience. Beyond the space itself, the residency includes curatorial, audience development, and marketing support, with planning and dialogue often beginning months in advance. These ongoing conversations with Fabrica's team help shape the artist's presentation, audience engagement, and the overall experience of the work in the gallery context.
