The Old Oak, directed by Ken Loach, tells the story of the last remaining pub in a former mining community struggling to get by. When Syrian refugees arrive in the village, tensions rise, but an unexpected friendship between pub landlord TJ and young Syrian refugee Yara opens up the possibility of something different. A moving story of loss, fear, friendship and hope, the film explores what happens when people with different histories and experiences find themselves sharing the same place.
We’ve chosen The Old Oak because its themes feel particularly relevant today. It invites us to think about how we welcome others, build bridges across differences and make shared spaces places of connection rather than division.
The screening will be introduced by Hummingbird’s Youth Ambassadors, who will share more about the charity’s work and what it means to them.
Join us for an evening of film, reflection and community, while helping Hummingbird create spaces where young people affected by forced displacement can find safety, friendship, belonging and opportunity.
The Hummingbird Refugee Project is an award-winning Brighton-based charity working alongside young people across Brighton & Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex.
The Old Oak was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and for Outstanding British Film at the 2024 BAFTAs, and won the Prix du Public at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival.
