Whale Rider / 2002 / 1hr&41mins / Subtitled / Rated PG

To celebrate the Great British Beach Clean 2022, we will be enjoying a film that showcases the power of the natural world and its potential harmony with people.

Shot in a remote and beautiful New Zealand coastal town, Whale Rider is a story that follows a young Maori girl facing her tribal destiny. Maori elder Koro is chief of a clan which claims descent from the legendary Whale Rider, who rode on top of a whale (Tohora) from Hawaiki. This uplifting story follows 12-year-old girl Pai, who despite the tradition that village leaders should be first-born sons, strives to prove to Koro, her grandfather, of her rightful place.

“The genius of the movie is the way it sidesteps all of the obvious cliches of the underlying story and makes itself fresh, observant, tough and genuinely moving.” Roger Egbert

After the screening, there will be a recycled scrap-book activity workshop table, for audiences to creatively consider our beaches and how we can look after them
