Chronically Online / 120mins / Cert 18 / Some films subtitled
We all have that one YouTube video we’re obsessed with. Or that one vine that we think about more than most movies.
From vlogs to memes to uncategorisable curiosities, these videos might not have initially been intended as ‘cinema’, but what is cinema if not images and narratives that are so iconic that they stick in our heads?
Our relationships to the internet are so personal — there isn’t a ‘canon’ for online moving image in the same way there is for movies, and so we’re all free to follow our own obsessions. To put this programme together, we’ve gathered a group of chronically online young curators in each city to lead us down their own favourite rabbit holes, shaping the programme around their own sense of local identity. In addition, we’re delighted to have partnered with the BFI National Archive which has enabled us to explore and select some of this programme from their own online moving image collections.
‘Chronically Online’ is presented in partnership with the BFI National Archive’s Our Screen Heritage Project, supported by the BFI Screen Heritage Fund, awarding National Lottery funding.
