Presented in partnership, as part of CINECITY The Brighton Film Festival. Programmed by Fresh Perspectives.
A cinematic poem subtitled “A Song of Two Humans,” Murnau’s first Hollywood film tells the story of a devoted peasant couple (George O’Brien and Janet Gaynor) whose peaceful marriage is threatened by the arrival of a scheming temptress from the city (Margaret Livingston).
Celebrated as one of the final great silent films, Sunrise earned three Academy Awards — for Best Actress (Gaynor), Best Cinematography, and a unique, never-repeated honour for “Unique and Artistic Picture.” Its pioneering visual style and emotional depth continue to inspire filmmakers nearly a century later.
With musical introduction from Harry Hayes.
