Maya, Give Me a Title is an imaginative animated comedy, created using a combination of hand-made paper cut-out animation, stop motion and live action. The film brings together a series of inventive stories inspired by ideas from Gondry’s daughter, Maya.

Living far apart, father and daughter stay connected through creativity as Maya suggests story prompts which Gondry transforms into colourful miniature adventures using paper, scissors, and tape. The result is a charming and deeply personal film celebrating imagination, storytelling and the bond between parent and child.

Workshop: Paper Cut Tales: Think of the silliest sentence you can! Led by Esther Marshall

Michel Gondry uses ideas from his daughter and layered cut out characters to build a world they can connect through. We’ve got the coloured paper, scissors and tape! All we need is a flock of mini creative directors and willing animation assistants. Please feel free to shake all the ideas from your mind onto the table because even a ketchup bottle can be a plot point.

Esther’s artist reference for inspiration: Philippa Rice, who makes lovely animations with her family which can be seen on her instagram! My favourites include ‘Princess of Space’, ‘You Can Be Weird With Me’ and ‘I Don’t Want to Do That’.
