Starring the legendary Lon Chaney as the mysterious Phantom, this landmark silent film brings Gaston Leroux’s gothic tale to life with elaborate costumes, extravagant sets and a haunting atmosphere. Made almost a century ago, it remains an extraordinary piece of cinema history – and a perfect film for a Halloween night.
The film will be accompanied by a brand-new live score from Scottish composers Andrew Wasylyk and Tommy Perman. Created especially for this screening, House With A Curse takes a contemporary approach to silent cinema, combining opera, neoclassical, acoustic and electronic instruments with elements of sound design to create a dramatic and immersive new soundtrack.
Following their acclaimed 2024 collaboration Ash Grey And The Gull Glides On, which was nominated for the Scottish Album of the Year Award, Andrew and Tommy reunite to bring their new score to life alongside this iconic film.
Come along for an atmospheric evening of cinema, live music and gothic thrills – and experience The Phantom of the Opera as you’ve never seen or heard it before.
House With A Curse is released on 16 October 2026 via Clay Pipe Music. Copies of the album will be available to buy on the evening.
CINECITY brings the best of international cinema to Brighton each year, with a programme of festival previews, live cinema, archive treasures and special events. This screening is part of CINECITY’s 2026 programme.
“From visceral jolts that jangle your senses, to a subtle camera angle and score that just might shift your heart’s intention, for me, going to the cinema’s a pretty big deal. A portal of possibilities. As my local picture house, many of my fondest film experiences have been at DCA. It’s been great (I mean, terrifying) watching the Dundead festival grow into an intrinsic part of their programme. I’m grateful, Tommy, and I have a chance to collaborate and contribute. Particularly, with such an important film in the horror genre. And in Technicolour too. Dust down your cloaks.”
