Sounds of Bali | Artist Talk + Q&A

Deen Lim: Making Space

Events & Talks (9 July 2026, 6.15pm - 7.30pm)
Join Brighton-based sound artist Deen Lim for an artist talk and Q&A exploring his practice, process and latest work-in-development, created during Fabrica's Making Space residency programme. Ahead of the talk, audiences are invited to experience the work-in-progress installation between 4–6pm.

Working with field recording, composition and spatial audio, Deen's practice investigates how sound shapes our experience of place, memory and collective experience. Drawing on recordings gathered during a residency in Bali, Indonesia earlier this year, he is currently developing an immersive 8.2 multichannel audio installation that brings together sounds of ritual, environment and performance. Through attentive listening and spatial composition, his work recontextualises sonic environments to reveal new perspectives on heritage, culture and belonging.

In this intimate evening event, Lim will reflect on his journey from music production into sound art, discussing the evolution of his practice and the ideas that underpin his work. He will share insights into the technical and creative challenges of working with field recordings and multichannel sound, as well as the importance of trust, collaboration and relationship-building when documenting ceremonial and cultural spaces. The conversation will focus on the development of his current project, including a recording captured from within a kecak fire dance circle – a perspective he first imagined over a decade ago and has only recently been able to realise.

The talk will be followed by an audience Q&A, offering an opportunity to ask questions about Lim's artistic practice, research methods, recording process and the making of the new installation.

Ahead of the event, audiences are invited to experience the work-in-progress installation between 4–6pm. Presented through ten speakers arranged around the listener, the composition immerses visitors in a carefully constructed sonic environment and provides context for the discussion that follows.

The public viewing will take place from 4–6pm, followed by the ticketed artist talk and Q&A from 6.15pm. Ticket holders will also have the opportunity to revisit the installation after the event, from 7.30pm.

Audience insights and feedback from both the viewing and discussion will contribute to the ongoing development of the work as it progresses towards a future exhibition.

Capacity for the evening event is limited and advance booking is essential. Please note there will be a short break between 6pm and 6.15pm while the space is prepared for the talk.

About The Artist

Deen Lim is a Brighton-based sound artist working with field recording, composition, and spatial audio. His practice explores how sound shapes perception, drawing from natural, urban and imagined sonic environments to create work that blends documentation and abstraction. Rooted in attentive listening, his process moves from field to studio, documenting ritual performances, environmental soundscapes and musical traditions, then editing and processing these into immersive installations. His work examines heritage and collective experience, re-contextualising sound to reveal how meaning and place live in what we hear.

Artist Residencies

The Making Space residency at Fabrica offers artists four days in the gallery to develop, test, or present new work to a focused audience. Beyond the space itself, the residency includes curatorial, audience development, and marketing support, with planning and dialogue often beginning months in advance. These ongoing conversations with Fabrica's team help shape the artist's presentation, audience engagement, and the overall experience of the work in the gallery context.
