Projekt Luma was founded by audiovisual artists Giles Thacker and Xavier Perkins, each having over 25 years of experience working across events, theatre, clubs, festivals, and commercial projects worldwide. Their work explores the synchronicity of sight and sound, pushing the boundaries of perception to reveal the hidden dimensions of light. With Ultravision X, they ask: What form could invisible light take? And what impact would this have on the viewer?
Ultravision X is a sensorial journey through interconnected rooms, each dedicated to a different wavelength of light. Through bespoke screen structures, video projection mapping, and spatial sound design, invisible photons are transformed into immersive environments. A character-led narrative, performed by a Brighton-based actor, will guide visitors through this shifting landscape, inviting them to explore and experience light beyond the limits of human vision.
This residency at Fabrica provides eight days of research and development to prototype and refine Ultravision X. Giles and Xavier will experiment with set design, audiovisual composition, and interactive storytelling, constructing a sequence of nine interconnected spaces. They will explore how an actor can lead audiences on a compelling 45-minute journey, ensuring a seamless, engaging, and transportive experience.
Throughout the residency, Projekt Luma will collaborate with set designers, sound designers, and performers to develop and test their ideas. Visitors will be invited to experience work-in-progress installations and provide feedback, helping shape the next phase of Ultravision X. This period of exploration will be key in advancing the project from concept to full-scale production, informing future developments in both artistic and technical execution.
Giles Thacker specialises in content creation and video design consultancy for live/event/theatre environments, in particular mapping and multiple screen installations. His work often takes surprising forms: 13 motorised screens (Orbital), layers of translucent screens (Emile Sande), the mapped surface of a car (Bentley), bespoke story-telling lampposts (Talking Posts), 15,000 pixel wide fragmented screen (TUC Congress). Alongside freelance projects he currently co-directs Brighton-based Shared Space and Light, an arts based projection mapping studio that aims to reveal the hidden stories within buildings and explore local communities’ sense of place.
Xavier Perkins is a freelance film editor working on commercial, film, documentary, and audiovisual projects worldwide. He has a dynamic audiovisual style that incorporates both editing and sound design. Alongside editing, Xavier is the creative director of Exceeda, an audiovisual collective producing concepts, and content for large scale events & mapping projects.
Projekt Luma is the culmination of a long-standing fascination with the intersection of science, art, and immersive storytelling. Giles Thacker and Xavier Perkins recognize the power of audiovisual narrative, particularly when combined with live performance, immersive technologies, and environmental installations.
Their residency at Fabrica marks a major milestone in the development of Ultravision X, bringing in collaborators and solidifying the foundations of both the project and Projekt Luma as a creative force. With a shared conviction that immersive audiovisual storytelling can be a powerful and transformative medium, they see a journey across the electromagnetic spectrum as a compelling starting point—one that blends science, art, and spectacle to inspire audiences.
As immersive experiences continue to grow in popularity across diverse audiences, Ultravision X will be Projekt Luma’s first major production. This ambitious project represents a significant step forward, strengthening their artistic practice and expanding their presence as creative entrepreneurs.
