Making Space

In the Flowing Water | Beiyi Wang

Artist Residencies & Projects (21 July to 25 July 2025)
Fabrica’s Making Space artist residency for July 2025 has been awarded to Beiyi Wang, who will be developing their current project, In the Flowing Water.

Conceived as a collaborative, interdisciplinary performance and participatory installation, In the Flowing Water explores the meditative and imaginative states we enter while bathing.

Throughout the week Beiyi will be working with sound and performance artists, a designer and a photographer to explore everyday wellness rituals: acts of cleansing, play, and introspection. And using sound, movement, and mark-making, creating a sensory environment for body, voice, and imagination.

Beiyi is concerned with developing three interwoven components as part of this exploration:

The creation of a bathing soundscape – using singing bowls, contact microphones, hand pans, metal basins and human voice, Beiyi is interested in building layered sonic textures that evoke dripping, splashing, and immersion.

Developing a water flow dance, where dancers respond to sound in real time, embodying water’s shifting relationship with the body.

Making a water trace painting – where dancers use paint to leave bodily traces on fabrics and panels, like condensation on bathroom mirrors.

Artists supporting Beiyi during the residency are: Sound - Matt Lewis, Tong Niu, Luke Pendrell; Spatial Design: Teng Wang, Hexuan Yu; Performance - Jaiden Xiu. Photography - Tingqi Liu.

At dusk, on 24 July 2025, 8.30-9.30pm, Beiyi is inviting a small audience into the space, to share their research from the residency via a work-in-progress performance and a short discussion about its themes. More information and tickets available here.

About The Artist

Beiyi Wang is a London-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice centers on healing arts, installation, performance, and socially engaged work. Emerging from embodied observation and ritual interactions with natural phenomena, Beiyi’s projects foster sensory awareness and collective consciousness. Their work explores the intersection of sound, somatic practices, and acoustic environments to create spaces of attentive stillness, where simple, intentional actions reveal profound encounters with presence and temporality.

Past projects Cocoonloo, Side Dish, and Moving Through the Beads illustrate Beiyi’s ongoing research into sensory engagement and transformation. These works invite participants into immersive, participatory experiences that aim to challenge perceptions of time and cultivate embodied healing. Through their Making Space residency, Beiyi will be continuing this exploration and shaping their distinctive approach to art as a meditative and collective process.

Originally from Beijing, Beiyi’s career began as a professional tennis player before transitioning into the arts. They studied Graphic Design and Fine Art at Flagler College in the USA, followed by an MFA in Communication at the Royal College of Art. Their work has been exhibited across Asia, Europe, and North America, with notable presentations in New York, Montreal, Kigali, Paris, London, Shanghai, and Sichuan.
